An intimate home/studio exhibition of paintings, with ceramicist Stephanie Johnson
1 Pontypool Place, was designed by architects Nagan Johnson in 2016 and completed in 2018. The new-build home sits over the Victorian warehouse that was the architects office pre-covid. This unusual home, featured on the Modern House website, and only previously open to the public once before, is the setting for a show of work by ceramicist Stephanie Johnson and painter/installation artist, Deb Nagan.
Deb Nagan works from her studio in Soho, London, and makes landscape scale installations in the UK and worldwide and small mixed-media works. She has recently been working on her largest landscape work in Saudi Arabia, and has created installations in Quebec, Toronto, France, Luxembourg and the UK.
The small works shown in this exhibition were all made in 2024 and 2025 have three themes:
Travels: Cornwall and New York
Ice: The Impact of encountering icebergs floating off the coast of Greenland
The State of Nature: Reflections on biodiversity, including close encounters with the river Thames from a single scull.
Stephanie Johnson studied ceramics recently completing her Masters at the University of Bath. She lives and works in Gers, France and is inspired by the landscape around her home. This is also the source of clay for some of her work, dug by hand from the garden, a former brick-claypit from which her home was constructed.
