Momentary instability, the wrong decision followed by sudden immersion; shock and breathlessness, ignominy & embarrassment, mild panic but not cold, even if the water is cold.
These quick works capture the many moments of capsize in learning to handle a single scull. Something that is so easy in childhood becomes physically and emotionally charged as an adult - a much harder than expected learning curve. Balance is critical, but so hard to achieve without speed, and the get up to speed you have to cross a threshold of fearlessness, until it seems easy. The colour blocks are representative of the still river, often the glinting low angle of early morning sun and, oh, the irony of being submerged in such perfect conditions.
